Sri Lanka’s ruling party sought a mandate to resume peace talks
with Tamil rebels in Wednesday’s (9/11) presidential election. Prime Minister Chandrika Kumaratunga was the favourite, but the size of her margin over five other candidates may determine whether she can resume peace talks with the Tamil Tigers. The prime minister’s main opponent is Dissanayake’s widow, Srima, who says Mrs. Kumaratunga is being exploited by the Tigers to allow them to regroup.
